Tamarindo is one of the most popular bases in Guanacaste, and Liberia International Airport (LIR) is the practical gateway — the drive is about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 minutes depending on traffic and your exact hotel. San José (SJO) is on the far side of the country and adds four to five hours of driving, so most Tamarindo-bound travelers fly into LIR.

The drive from Liberia to Tamarindo
About 65 km on Highway 21, heading south past Filadelfia and through the Santa Cruz junction before turning west for the coast. It’s well-paved the whole way and takes roughly an hour and a half in a standard car. Playa Grande looks close on a map — it sits just across the estuary — but by road it is a separate 30 to 45 minute drive around, so tell your driver which side of the water your hotel is on.
