Tamarindo is one of the most popular bases in Guanacaste, and Liberia International Airport (LIR) is the practical gateway — the drive is about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes depending on traffic and your exact hotel. San José (SJO) is on the far side of the country and adds four to five hours of driving, so most Tamarindo-bound travelers fly into LIR.
