Seven tours name Liberia as their departure town, and those are the ones listed above. That number understates the real choice, because operators tag a tour to the town it leaves from — and Liberia is where the airport is, not where most people sleep. In practice a large share of Guanacaste’s tours will collect you from a Liberia hotel or meet an arriving flight, even when they are filed under Tamarindo or Playas del Coco. If you are basing yourself in Liberia, treat the full tour index as your real list and check each tour’s pickup area rather than stopping at the seven below.
What genuinely starts closer to Liberia than to the beaches is the volcano and waterfall country to the north and east. Rincón de la Vieja is the nearest national park: the Las Pailas sector is about 25 km out, open Tuesday to Sunday from 8am to 3pm and closed Mondays, with tickets sold only through SINAC’s online system — there is no gate kiosk, which catches people out. Llanos de Cortés waterfall is open daily 8am–4pm with the swimming area closing at 3pm, cash only, run by the Municipality of Bagaces rather than the park service. Hacienda Guachipelín, which runs the Oropéndola waterfall and most of the combo tours, is 34 km from the airport — under an hour.
