Guanacaste Events
Fiestas, races and seasonal wildlife across Guanacaste — with how firm each date actually is.

Why some of these have no date
Cantonal fiestas in Guanacaste are confirmed by municipal committees a few weeks ahead and announced locally, often on a Facebook page. Twelve months out there is usually nothing to publish — which is why most English-language calendars of this province are quietly showing you last year’s dates. Everything below is labelled with how firm it actually is, and nothing is given a date we could not source.
Dates you can plan around
Anexión del Partido de Nicoya
Fixed date
25 July, every year
Falls on a Sunday in 2027
Province-wide; biggest in Nicoya and Santa Cruz
Guanacaste’s own national day, marking the 1824 annexation. A public holiday, and the largest date in the provincial calendar. Nicoya’s programme runs a tope de toros with marching bands from 1pm and free bull riding from 3pm at the Campo Ferial San Blas.
Semana Santa
Calculable ahead
22–28 March 2027 · 10–16 April 2028 · 26 March – 1 April 2029
Nationwide; the Guanacaste coast fills with Costa Rican visitors
The busiest week of the Costa Rican domestic year. Accommodation books out months ahead and prices rise; much of the country closes on the Thursday and Friday. Book early or plan around it.
Recurring — last confirmed dates
These happen every year. The dates shown are from the edition named, not an upcoming one.
Fiestas Típicas Nacionales
Last confirmed 2026
14–18 January 2026
Typically mid-january — anchored to the feast of santo cristo de esquipulas on 15 january, which does not move. Confirm before booking travel around it.
Santa Cruz
The national folkloric fiesta, held in the town declared Costa Rica’s Ciudad Folclórica, in honour of the Santo Cristo de Esquipulas — whose patronal day, 15 January, is the fixed point the rest of the programme is built around. In 2026 the saint left Hato Viejo at 6am on the 14th with a solemn procession that afternoon, the patronal Eucharist was at 10am on the 15th, and the Burra Fiestera closed it on the 18th. Marimba, traditional dance, a tope de toros from noon each day starting in the Santa Cecilia district, and bull riding from 2pm to 8pm. The one to prioritise if you can choose.
Fiestas Cívicas de Liberia
Last confirmed 2025
19 February – 2 March 2025
Typically late february into early march. Confirm before booking travel around it.
Liberia
Liberia’s civic fiesta: music, bull riding and parades over roughly a fortnight.
Expo Liberia
Last confirmed 2026
15–27 July 2026
Typically mid-to-late july, around the anexión. Confirm before booking travel around it.
Liberia
Liberia’s agricultural and commercial fair, timed to overlap the Anexión holiday.
Tamarindo Beach Marathon
Last confirmed 2026
5 September 2026
Typically early september. Confirm before booking travel around it.
Tamarindo
Its 18th edition in 2026, and it sold out. Starts at four in the morning — sunrise on race day is 5:32am, so the long distances run their first seventy-two minutes in the dark. Not to be confused with the triathlon.
Tamarindo Triathlon
Last confirmed 2026
15 November 2026
Typically november — inaugural edition. Confirm before booking travel around it.
Tamarindo
A separate, inaugural event with no search history and no previous edition. Routinely confused with the Beach Marathon, which runs in September.
No fixed date
Governed by moon, tide or season. Any page that gives you a date for these is guessing.
Arribadas at Ostional
No fixed date
Concentrated in the second half of the year; announced days ahead
Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Ostional, beside Nosara
Mass olive ridley arrivals. They depend on moon and tide, so no calendar can give you a date — the refuge knows only a few days in advance. Ostional also has a 60 m beach boardwalk, an amphibious chair and two wheelchairs.
Bioluminescence dark-moon windows
No fixed date
Governed by the moon, not the season — three nights either side of each new moon
Paquera and Punta Cuchillos, Gulf of Nicoya
The one natural event here you can genuinely plan years ahead, because it follows the lunar calendar rather than the weather. Avoid the week around each full moon.
How to find the real date
In the order that works: the municipality’s own Facebook page (search “Municipalidad de” plus the canton); Guanacaste’s Spanish-language press — Trivisión, Vive Guanacaste, La Voz de Guanacaste; then your hotel, who will also know which nights the noise reaches you. Treat English-language calendars, including this one, as the shape of the year rather than as a source for a specific day.
