Staying in Tamarindo or Playa Hermosa?
You don’t have to drive to Flamingo. For snorkelers and divers: the Catalina Islands
The Catalinas are uninhabited volcanic rock pinnacles about 6 miles west of Playa Flamingo — roughly 40 minutes by boat. They’re Guanacaste’s best-known snorkel and dive site, with rays, white-tip reef sharks, turtles, moray eels and large schools of fish. Giant manta rays are most often seen from about November to April.

When to go: season, wind and sunset
Dry season (December–April) brings sunshine but also the Papagayo winds, which can make the sea choppy, especially in the afternoon. In windy months, a morning sail usually means calmer water.
Green season (May–November) is quieter; operators recommend morning tours for calmer water and clearer snorkeling.
Sunset ranges from about 5:15pm in November to about 6:10pm in July, so sunset sails generally leave in the early afternoon.
Whales: humpbacks visit the Gulf of Papagayo from about November to April and again from July to November. Sightings from a catamaran are a bonus, not a guarantee.
Snorkel responsibly
