If you’ve already booked San José (SJO), you have five real options: a domestic flight (fastest, about 45–50 minutes in the air), a shared shuttle (best value, about $62–$97 per person), a private transfer (about $300–$470 per vehicle), a public bus (cheapest, about $10–$18, but from downtown San José), or driving yourself (about 4–5 hours).

Fares were checked on 15 September 2026 on each operator’s own site, mostly for September–October travel (low season). Expect higher prices from December to April, and confirm before you book. Colón prices are converted at about ₡447 to the US dollar.

Domestic flights: fastest, but strict on bags
Sansa flies from SJO’s separate Domestic Terminal, a short walk from international arrivals, to Liberia, Tamarindo and Nosara. Flights take about 45–50 minutes. In Sansa’s booking calendar for September–October 2026, one-way fares ran about $74–$109 to Liberia, $109–$164 to Tamarindo and around $99 to Nosara; taxes may be added at checkout, and high season costs more. Costa Rica Green Airways also lists Nosara flights — check its current schedule. We couldn’t find scheduled flights to Sámara (Carrillo).
Carry-on (Sansa): up to 50×30×20 cm, with 4.5 kg (10 lb) included; heavier bags must be checked.
Checked bags (Sansa): up to 76×46×34 cm; the weight allowance depends on the fare you buy.
Surfboards (Sansa): up to 6.7 ft, from $40 per leg plus tax, and space isn’t guaranteed.
Green Airways: fares include a 14 kg (30 lb) checked bag and a 4.5 kg carry-on.
Leave room for delays
Small planes are delayed or cancelled for weather more often than jets, and bags can be sent on a later flight. Don’t book a tight same-day connection to or from an international flight.
Shared shuttles: the best value for most travelers
Shared shuttles pick you up at the airport or your San José hotel and drop you at your hotel in Guanacaste. Interbus meets passengers outside International Arrivals. Quoted for October 2026:
Interbus: $62 per adult to Tamarindo, Playas del Coco, Liberia or Sámara; $63 to Flamingo and Conchal; $91 to Nosara. Extra bags are $15, and VAT may be added.
Tropical Tours: $65 per person to Tamarindo and $97 to Nosara, about 5½ hours.
Landing late?
Most shuttles leave SJO in the morning (Interbus’s main departure is 8:15am, with a second Tamarindo run around 2pm). If you land in the afternoon or evening, stay near the airport and ride the next morning rather than arriving after dark.
Private transfers: door to door, priced per vehicle
A private driver leaves when you land and takes you straight to your hotel. Expect about $300–$470 per vehicle including tax and 4½–5½ hours. Examples: Tropical Tours charges $297 to Tamarindo or Nosara (plus $20 per person beyond six passengers and $20 for pickups between 9pm and 6am); Interbus quotes $331 to Playas del Coco; other operators start around $419 plus tax to Tamarindo.
Because the price is per vehicle, a group of five or more pays about the same per person as a shared shuttle — with no stops. We don’t currently list an SJO transfer that meets our rating and review bar; see our San José transfer page for where we stand.
Public buses: cheapest, but they leave from downtown
Buses to Guanacaste don’t leave from the airport — you’ll need a taxi or rideshare into central San José first. One thing many guides get wrong: Empresa Alfaro and Tralapa no longer run these routes. Transporte Inteligente de Guanacaste (TIG) took them over in 2022–2023. Check the departure terminal when you book on TIG’s site.
Tamarindo and Flamingo (TIG): ₡8,080 (about $18); Tamarindo departures at 8:30am and 3:30pm via the Tempisque bridge take about 5 hours, with more departures via Liberia.
Nosara, Sámara and Nicoya (TIG): ₡4,350 (about $10); Nosara departures at 5:30am and 3pm.
Liberia and Playas del Coco (Pulmitan de Liberia): about 4–5 hours. Fares were ₡4,820 to Liberia and ₡6,190 to Playas del Coco in late 2024 but were under review — confirm the current fare.
Driving yourself
It’s about 215 km and 4 hours to Liberia, and roughly 250 km and 4½–5 hours to Tamarindo. The usual route takes Route 27 west toward Caldera, then Route 23 and Route 1 north. For Tamarindo and the Nicoya Peninsula, turn off at Limonal onto Route 18 and cross the Tempisque River on the Amistad (Taiwan Friendship) bridge. You don’t need a 4x4 on this route.
Tolls: Route 27 has several plazas at ₡190–₡760 each for a car (July 2026) — a few dollars in total.
Timing: leave early and avoid the drive after dark; markings are poor in places and stretches are unlit.
Security: don’t leave luggage visible in a parked car at rest stops.

What’s the cheapest way from SJO to Tamarindo?
The TIG bus from downtown San José, at about ₡8,080 (roughly $18), plus a taxi or rideshare from the airport to the terminal. The cheapest option straight from the airport is a shared shuttle, from about $62 per person.
How long does it take to get from San José to Tamarindo?
About 4½–5 hours by car, roughly 5 hours by shuttle or bus, or about 50 minutes on a domestic flight.
Can I get to Guanacaste the same day I land at SJO?
Yes, if you land in time for an afternoon flight or shuttle. With a late arrival, it’s usually better to stay near the airport and travel the next morning than to drive at night.
Should I just fly into Liberia instead?
