What the dry season boughtThe travel-time problemWhen Guanacaste is the right choiceWhen it is notCombining it with somewhere elseComparisons of Costa Rica’s regions usually turn into lists of attractions, which is not much help because every region has good ones. The difference that actually decides your trip is climatic.
Guanacaste is the dry one. The twenty-year record at Liberia airport gives a dry season of December to March and a rainy season of May to October, with April and November transitional. Much of the rest of the country has no comparable dry window — the Caribbean side has no real dry season at all, and the cloud forests are wet by definition. Nearly everything else that distinguishes Guanacaste follows from that one fact.
What the dry season bought
Reliable sunshine in the northern-hemisphere winter is why the resorts, the international airport and the direct flights are here rather than somewhere greener. It is also why Guanacaste’s landscape is tropical dry forest — a genuinely rare ecosystem, and one that looks parched and brown for months at a time rather than lush.
If you arrive in March expecting the Costa Rica of the tourist posters — dripping rainforest, waterfalls everywhere — Guanacaste in the dry season will look wrong to you. It is not failing to be rainforest. It is a different biome, and the best time to visit guide covers what each season actually looks like here.
The travel-time problem
The second structural fact: Guanacaste is well connected to the outside world and badly connected to the rest of Costa Rica.
Published transfer estimates by road from each airport.
| Destination | From Liberia (LIR) | From San José (SJO) |
|---|---|---|
Playas del Coco, Hermosa, Papagayo | 25–45 min | 4½–5 hr |
Flamingo, Potrero, Brasilito, Conchal | 1–1¼ hr | 4½–5 hr |
Tamarindo, Langosta, Playa Grande | 1–1½ hr | 4½–5½ hr |
Sámara & Carrillo | 2–2½ hr | 4½–5 hr |
Nosara | 2½–3 hr | 4½–5½ hr |
La Fortuna / Arenal | 2¾–3½ hr | 3–3½ hr |
Read the last row against the others. For the Guanacaste coast, Liberia beats San José by three to four hours on every route. Arenal is the one place the two airports are comparable — which is exactly why Arenal is the realistic add-on to a Guanacaste trip and why almost nothing else is. The airport guide has the full comparison.
Costa Rica is small on a map and not on the road
The country looks like somewhere you can tour in a fortnight. Mountain roads, single-lane bridges and river crossings mean the drive times above are the realistic ones. Two bases in two weeks works. Four does not.
When Guanacaste is the right choice
You want reliable sun in January, February or March. Nowhere else in the country matches it.
You want a beach holiday with short transfers. Thirty minutes from an international airport to the sand is not available elsewhere in Costa Rica.
You are surfing. The Nicoya coast is the deepest concentration of consistent, accessible surf in the country.
You have a week or less. The arithmetic is unanswerable: time spent moving is time not spent anywhere.
You want resorts and standards. This is where that infrastructure is — the destination pages set out what each base offers.
When it is not
This is the part most guides skip, so plainly:
What you are actually after, and where it is.
| If you want | Go instead to |
|---|---|
Rainforest and maximum wildlife density | The Osa Peninsula and Corcovado, or Tortuguero |
Cloud forest, quetzals, cool air | Monteverde or San Gerardo de Dota |
Volcano, hot springs, green landscape | La Fortuna and Arenal — reachable from either airport |
Caribbean culture, food and music | Puerto Viejo and the Talamanca coast |
Beaches plus easy rainforest in one base | Manuel Antonio or Uvita on the central Pacific |
The cheapest possible trip | Almost anywhere else — Guanacaste is the most expensive region |
The honest summary is that Guanacaste is the best beach region and not the best nature region. There is real wildlife here — see our wildlife guide — but a week in the Osa will show you more of it, and anyone whose trip is built around biodiversity should think hard before basing here.
Combining it with somewhere else
The standard and sensible two-centre trip is Guanacaste plus Arenal, because of that last table row: Arenal is roughly three hours from Liberia, it is the only major destination not hugely closer to San José, and it is a complete change of scene — volcano, hot springs and green country after dry forest and beach.
Monteverde is the other common pairing and is harder work than it looks; the roads are slow. Anything on the Caribbean side or in the far south is really a separate trip, and trying to staple it on is how people end up spending a quarter of their holiday in a car. Our how many days guide sets out what fits in three, five and seven.

What makes Guanacaste different from the rest of Costa Rica?
A real dry season. The twenty-year record at Liberia gives December to March as dry and May to October as rainy, where much of the country — particularly the Caribbean side and the cloud forests — has no comparable dry window. That is why the resorts and the international airport are here, and why the landscape is tropical dry forest rather than rainforest.
Is Guanacaste the best part of Costa Rica to visit?
It is the best beach region and the easiest to reach, with transfers of 30 minutes to three hours from its own international airport. It is not the best nature region: for wildlife density the Osa Peninsula and Tortuguero are better, for cloud forest Monteverde, and for Caribbean culture Puerto Viejo. It is also the most expensive region in the country.
Can you combine Guanacaste with other parts of Costa Rica?
Guanacaste plus Arenal is the sensible two-centre trip, because Arenal is the one major destination that is not much closer to San José — roughly 2¾ to 3½ hours from Liberia against 3 to 3½ from San José. Monteverde is possible but slow. The Caribbean coast and the far south are really separate trips.
Should I fly into Liberia or San José?
For anywhere on the Guanacaste coast, Liberia, by a margin of three to four hours on every route. San José only makes sense if your trip is mostly elsewhere, or if Arenal is the first stop — that is the single destination where the two airports are comparable.
Is Guanacaste green or dry?
Both, depending when you come. It is tropical dry forest, so from roughly December to March it is genuinely brown and parched, and from May to October it is green. Visitors who arrive in the dry season expecting rainforest are often surprised — it is a different and rarer ecosystem, not a failed version of the one in the brochures.
