The surf, brieflyThe wellness thing, honestlyThe third pillar nobody sellsGetting there is the price of admissionWho should choose NosaraThe most common mistake with Nosara is made at the booking stage, and it is geographic. "Nosara" is at least four separate places, and only some of them are near the beach you have seen photographs of.
What the one name covers.
| Place | What it is |
|---|---|
Playa Guiones | The walkable hub: the 7 km surf beach, most of the restaurants, yoga studios and visitor accommodation. This is what people mean by "Nosara". |
Playa Pelada | Quieter cove just north, rockier, a handful of places to eat, a different and slower feel. |
Boca Nosara | Residential, near the river mouth. Houses rather than hotels. |
Nosara village | The original town, inland. A real Costa Rican village with a football pitch and a supermarket — and not a beach. |
Book accommodation in "Nosara" without checking which, and you can end up several kilometres inland with no walkable beach and a hire car as a requirement rather than a convenience. Check the actual location against Playa Guiones before you pay.
The surf, briefly
Playa Guiones runs about 7 km with a consistent beach break that works at almost any state of tide. That is why surfers of every level base themselves here: there is nearly always something rideable, and enough room that a lesson is not happening on top of someone doing turns.
The same waves and rip currents make Nosara’s beaches poor for casual swimming, which is the trade-off and is worth knowing before you arrive with small children expecting a paddling beach. We compare it directly against the harder-breaking Santa Teresa in Santa Teresa vs Nosara, and against the northern beach towns in the three-way comparison.
The wellness thing, honestly
It is real and it is substantial — there are a lot of yoga studios, retreats and the associated cafés, and that community has been here long enough to shape the town rather than decorate it.
Two honest notes. It makes Nosara more expensive than its size suggests, particularly for food. And it makes evenings very quiet: if you want anywhere to go after nine o’clock, this is the wrong town, and that is a deliberate local preference rather than an oversight.
The third pillar nobody sells
Nosara is marketed as two things. It is actually three, and the third is the reason it looks the way it does — the forest comes down to the sand, which is unusual on this coast and is why the beach in the photograph above has an unbroken tree line behind it.
What that gets you, from the listed activities:
Operator-published prices and durations, per person, checked October 2026.
| Activity | Length | From |
|---|---|---|
Hiking and birdwatching in the Nosara biological reserve — an 85-acre property | 1.5 hours | $65 |
Small-group safari float on the Nosara river | 2 hours | $70 |
Waterfall rappelling, 6 km from town | 3 hours | $90 |
The river float is the one most visitors overlook and the one that suits the widest range of people: two hours, no effort, and howler monkeys, iguanas and birds at close range. It is the Nosara equivalent of the Tempisque boat trips further north, at a fraction of the travel time.
And Ostional is next door — the refuge where mass turtle arrivals happen. That is a genuine reason to choose Nosara over anywhere else on this coast in season, and our sea turtle guide covers when the arribadas actually occur and how to watch without doing harm.
Getting there is the price of admission
Nosara is about 2½ to 3 hours from Liberia airport, the longest standard transfer among the main Guanacaste bases. That is the cost of its character: the places that are easy to reach are the places that got developed.
Do not take the coastal road via Ostional on spec
It looks shorter and it gets muddy, and the river between Ostional and Nosara is sometimes impassable even with the newer bridge. In the green season take the inland route and treat the coastal one as a local’s call on the day.
Who should choose Nosara
Choose it if you surf or want to learn properly over a week, if the yoga-and-wellness side is a draw rather than something to tolerate, if you want wildlife without organising a day trip to find it, or if you are coming in turtle season.
Choose elsewhere if you want calm swimming water, nightlife, a short transfer from the airport, or a cheap week. Playas del Coco and Playa Hermosa are forty minutes from LIR instead of three hours, and the beaches guide covers what else varies along this coast.
See what there is to do in Nosara
The river float is the under-booked one.
Is Nosara village on the beach?
No. The original Nosara village is inland and is a working Costa Rican town rather than a resort. The beach hub most visitors mean is Playa Guiones, with quieter Playa Pelada to the north and residential Boca Nosara near the river mouth. Check which one your accommodation is actually in before booking, because the distances are walkable only within Guiones.
Is Nosara good for beginner surfers?
Yes — Playa Guiones has a consistent beach break over about 7 km that works at almost any tide, so there is nearly always a rideable wave and plenty of room for lessons. The same conditions make it a poor beach for casual swimming, which is the trade-off.
What is there to do in Nosara besides surfing and yoga?
More than the marketing suggests. There is hiking and birdwatching in an 85-acre biological reserve from about $65, a two-hour small-group safari float on the Nosara river from about $70 that reliably produces howler monkeys and birds, waterfall rappelling 6 km from town from about $90, plus cycling and cooking classes. Ostional, where mass turtle arrivals happen, is next door.
How far is Nosara from Liberia airport?
About two and a half to three hours, the longest standard transfer among the main Guanacaste bases. Avoid the coastal route via Ostional unless a local tells you it is passable that day — it gets muddy and the river is sometimes impassable even with the newer bridge.
Does Nosara have nightlife?
Effectively no, and that is deliberate rather than accidental. Evenings are low-key and most things close early. If a town with somewhere to go after nine matters to you, Tamarindo or Playas del Coco are the better choices.
